1920

In 1910, a car entered Laholm for the first time. It was a French make, Panhard, and received a lot of attention. Wealthy merchants started buying cars. From the thriving bicycle manufacture in Laholm at the time, some technology pioneers started working within the car manufacturing business. This lead to companies with a connection to the car industry, such as ‘Laholms Karosseri’, opening.

The T-Ford Model was very popular in Sweden.

In 1934, Yngve Nilsson is employed by Laholms Karosseri after several years of practice as a wagon dealer in different parts of Skåne. There was a high standard of knowledge within the company that Yngve had to meet, which he did.

1940

The World War brought the car production to a halt.

Yngve and his wife Linnea start ‘Yngve Nilssons Karosseri’ in 1945. Where Taxis, fire trucks and distribution cars are some of the vehicles constructed.

The company has two employees.

The number of employees increases steadily to 10. The production of hearses begins.

Yngve Nilsson Karosseri receives its first order from Volvo – to re-build an ‘Amazon’ to a service vehicle. This lead to an increased production of Ambulances built from Volvo cars. Hearses are exported to the UK market.

1970

Yngve Nilsson’s twin sons, Karl-Erik and Nils-Åke, take over the company and its cooperation with Volvo develops. Yngve Nilsson Karosseri becomes a subcontractor of Volvo. Ambulances, Hearses and Limousines dominate production. A brand new factory is being built.

1980

The DDR became major buyers of Limousines, 123 Volvo-limos and Volvo-Landaulettes. Citroen Limousines are built for the East German state. Hearses were assembled in Indonesia and Limousines were assembled in Thailand and Malaysia. Hearses and Limousines were exported to the UK market.

Yngve Nilsson Karosseri is named Laholm’s Entrepreneur of the Year.

1990

Yngve Nilsson Karosseri were not only re-buidling Volvo cars but also Ford Hearses, Opel Limousines and Mercedes Hearses were produced. In addition, a number of spectacular cars were built, like the prototype of the Volvo 850 convertible, the extended Mercedes A-Class, the Ferrari Dino 206 S and more. In 1995, Yngve Nilsson Karosseri celebrated their 50th Anniversary.

The company’s cooperation with Volvo changes, and Yngve Nilsson Karosseri no longer works as a subcontractor of Volvo. The company must work on its own and begin development projects of Limousines and Hearses on the new S80 chassis.

2001

3000 Limousines had been built in Laholm by 2001. The motto for Yngve Nilsson’s Limousine production, “Making Cars Longer”, was known all over the world.

2004

Yngve Nilsson Karosseri is reconstructed into Nilsson Special Vehicles. The idea for the new Nilsson company was to continue building on Volvo chassis’ and about 20 new jobs became available. Although the start-up of Nilsson Special Vehicles encountered some problems, the owner, Ulf Corné, and the employees were ready to give it their all. The car construction took off again and one of the biggest projects was a Limousine for the Dutch Royal Court. By the end of the year, Nilsson had delivered 31 vehicles. The struggle to regain confidence and trust as well as being involved in the car industry once again, had given great results.

Production increased rapidly and markets around the world started to show interest in the small company in Laholm once again.

The company’s cooperation with Volvo had developed well and significant subcontractors were now linked to the company. With the production rate increasing, so did the number of jobs.

The market for Ambulances grew both in Norway and Sweden, which further increased production. By 2006, Nilsson Special Vehicles had established itself on the market and was a company that wanted to stay on the market and be part of the development of it.

In the fall of 2007, Sheikh Mohammed Al-Almoudi becomes the new principal owner of the company.

During 2008 many large orders were placed, including an order of over 50 Hearses and Limousines from our dealers in the UK, Wilcox & Co. These cars were delivered mostly in 2008 and some in 2009.

Nilsson was also working towards establishing dealers and retailers in other European countries. The economic crisis hits, affecting the global Special Vehicles industry, and, as a result, Nilsson is also affected by a decrease in orders.

Nilsson wins a prestigious procurement of Ambulances from Northern Europe’s biggest Hospital, Ullevål University Hospital in Oslo. To date, we have delivered 8 cars and confirmed the order of another 6 cars that will be delivery ready before the summer.

By 2009, Nilsson had established dealers and retailers in Italy, Poland, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, Spain and France.

2010

The introduction of the new Ambulance in April 2007 was a major milestone in Nilsson’s history. Even before the launch, there were a number of confirmed orders, and since then, the orders have increased.

2010 was the year that Nilsson not only got the Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA) for Ambulances for the European Market, but Nilsson also got it for some of their Hearses. This lead to Nilsson wanting to expand their product versatility in Europe.

2015

Nilsson celebrates its 70th Anniversary. The order intake has increased by 75 percent compared to the previous year. A new model for Ambulances is being developed using the new XC90 chassis.

This is also the year that Nilsson is launched on the stock exchange. The CEO Karl Justh celebrates this major step in Nilsson’s history. The first day of trading with Nilsson’s shares on Nasdaq First North was December 11th.
